MSOC Falls in District Finals to Muskegon, 3-0
Two first half goals proved more than enough as the Muskegon Jayhawks topped the Massasoit men’s soccer team, 3-0, in the NJCAA Division II Northeast District Finals.
MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN ---- Two first half goals proved more than enough as the Muskegon Jayhawks topped the Massasoit men's soccer team, 3-0, in the NJCAA Division II Northeast District Finals.
Muskegon (11-4-3), out of Region 12, earns an automatic bid the NJCAA National Tournament, held in Wichita, Kansas. Massasoit awaits the soccer selection committee's decision, as the Division II National Tournament field consists of four at-large bids.
Massasoit (10-3-2) had difficulties getting much going offensively, being held in check to just seven shots on the afternoon.
"We picked a bad day to play our worst game of the season," head coach Rui Estrela said. "Muskegon definitely out-played us and deserved to win. I wish we had given a little bit better effort today. I am not sure if we were too excited or what, but I wish we played a little better soccer."
Muskegon blocked consecutive attempted clear outs by the Warrior defense, took the ball and went to goal in the 20th minute. That was all the offense the Jayhawks would need on Saturday afternoon.
The three goals allowed marked the most of the 2021 season by the Warriors.
Goalie Carlos Neto made nine saves in the loss.
