Men’s Basketball Drops Season Opener At Springfield Tech

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ---- Sophomore Jahleel Moise of Brockton, recorded 13 blocked shots, but his impressive defensive effort was not enough as the Massasoit men's basketball team fell 68-54 at Springfield Tech on Saturday.

The contest marked the season opener for the Warriors (0-1) compared to Springfield Tech (3-1), which competed in its fourth game of the year.

"We played hard, but it is tough when (Springfield Tech) is in midseason form already having played three games before playing us," Massasoit head coach Jim Stapleton said. "But for our first game I thought we did some things well. The key will be learning from our mistakes on Saturday."

Moise, who transferred from UMass-Boston, finished with seven points and five rebounds to go along with his 13 swats.

Sophomore Trey Jones (Mattapan) led the Warriors with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Leland Jackson (Brockton) chipped in with nine points and a team-high 14 boards in the loss.

The Rams held a 34-24 lead at the break as the Warriors struggled to put the ball in the hoop. For the game, Massasoit shot just 32.3 percent from the floor (20-or-62).

Massasoit would pull within six points in the second half, but could get no closer as STCC claimed the 14-point win.

The Warrior defense held STCC to 36.1 percent (26-of-72) shooting overall and the Rams only knocked down 6-of-22 3-point attempts (27.3 percent).

In total, STCC featured four players in double figures, led by Steve Hardie, who came off the bench to net 15 off 7-of-16 shooting.
