SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine ---- Southern Maine Community College claimed game two in extra innings to sweep the Massasoit baseball team in a doubleheader on Sunday, winning by scores of 17-2 and 8-7.
Massasoit dropped to 3-7 on the young season and hosts the University of Connecticut at Avery Point on Tuesday.
Game 1: Southern Maine 17, Massasoit 2 (5 Innings)
The Seawolves touched home 11 times in the bottom half of the first to put game one of reach early on.
Luke Lewando (Brockton) clocked a two-run homer, his second of the season, in the third inning to account for the Warrior runs.
Game 2: Southern Maine 8, Massasoit 7 (8 Innings)
A game that saw the score seesaw back in forth, it was SMCC that broke a 7-7 tie in extras innings to earn the twinbill sweep.
The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run double from Ricky Sherlock (Whitman).
After expanding the lead to 3-0 on a Sherlock sac fly in the third, the Seawolves answered with three runs over the next two frames.
However, SMCC answered right back with four runs of its own, and eventually scored on an error in the last of the eighth to steal the second game, 8-7 in extra innings.
Spoiled in the loss was the pitching performance from Luke DiTondo (Marshfield). The righty went the first six frames, allowing three earned runs off seven hits, while walking two and punching out seven in the no decision.
The Warriors finished with nine hits as a team, with Andrews and O'Donnell each roping a double as part of two-hit days at the plate. Sherlock and O'Donnell combined to knock in five runs and Andrews scored three times in the loss.
